Spring Snowfall

$175.00

Spring Snowfall is inspired by my study of Alma Thomas, an influential modern artist and the first African American woman to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of Art. Thomas was part of the Washington Color School movement of the 1960s, and her discoveries about color influenced contemporaries Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis and Gene Davis.

I have created several artworks in homage to Alma Thomas, including this one, because I love the way that Alma studies color by breaking light into small dabs. She uses dabs where I typically use stripes, but the impetus is the same: to study the optical effects of color. I really enjoyed creating this painting because abstract paintings are like color environments that have never been seen before.

The painting has black edges and has a lot of textures.
